Description

Early birds are in for a treat at the Pretoria Boeremark

Winner of Eat In magazine’s 'Outstanding Outlet: Market North of the Vaal River’ award in 2008, 2010 and 2011, the Pretoria Boeremark is the real deal of farmer’s market.

The award honours markets that consistently promote high quality, innovative, utterly South African food in a joyful, family friendly environment – and organiser Johan van Wyk says “We’re moerse proud!”

Situated on one of the oldest working farms in Pretoria, the good old-fashioned market attracts 5 000 people who come to shop and gather together under the trees at one of the coffee stalls. Traditional food is very popular, with pap en kaiings (cornmeal and crackling), vetkoek and melkkos on offer. Johan van Wyk cautions, “And if you happen to put your plate down on the ground, your food will immediately be gobbled up by one of the turkeys or geese running around!”

According to Johan, it’s a wonderful fusion of diverse cultures, sensory experiences and town-meets-country-meets-Africa. “We have everyone from Afrikaans tannies making pancakes and Zimbabwean crafters selling their wireworks to a group of local Zulu singers regaling the crowd with opera music.”

Most of the traders live in the Pretoria area, but some come from far off Tzaneen and the Free State. Ultra fresh produce is the main attraction and you can stock up on bread, nuts, fruit and vegetables, spices, herbs, homemade cookies, rusks, jams and preserves, cheeses, yoghurt, poultry, and meat. Numerous arts, crafts, handmade clothes, jewellery, woodwork and niche products are also sold here.

Open every Saturday 05:00 – 09:30 at the Pioneer Museum, Keuning Street.
